What landscaping in St. Petersburg actually involves
St. Petersburg is a peninsula, and coastal Pinellas landscaping is a different job from inland Hillsborough. Salt wind, sandy soil that drains almost too well, and a high water table near the waterfront all change what will survive.
Sandy soil is the one people underestimate. Water and nutrients move straight through it, so a planting that would be fine in Brandon will look starved here on the same irrigation program. We amend the soil at installation and set the irrigation to shorter, more frequent cycles rather than long soaks that drain past the roots.
Palms carry a lot of the character on this side of the bay. They need dead fronds and seed pods removed and green fronds left alone. Cutting a palm back to a narrow tuft weakens it, and after a bad storm the over-pruned ones are the ones that fail.
